Help Searching the Collections
The heart of Hudson River Valley Heritage is the Digital Collections. When you use the search feature on this site you are searching the descriptive information associated with items in the collections. The search box does NOT search our online exhibits or newspapers. Please visit HRVH Historical Newspapers to browse and search our newspaper collection.
The simple search box searches for items across all fields in all collections for all terms that you put in the search box, in any order. For example, if you search for "Hasbrouck House", the search engine searches for item records containing "Hasbrouck" AND "house".
The advanced search provides you with more control over your search. First, you can select the collection(s) you want to search. You can search across all fields or select fields for searching (Title, Subject, Description, etc.). You can specify if you want to find items that match all of your search terms, any of your search terms, or an exact phrase. You can also specify terms that should not be included in your search.
Both the simple search box and the advanced search feature support the use of a wildcard operator that enables you to search for approximate terms. Using an asterisk (*) at the end of a search term will search for results with none, or any number of any characters appended to the root search term. For example, farm* will find results with the words "farm," "farms," "farming," "farmers" and so on.
After using the simple search or Advanced Search, you can start a new simple search by typing the search term and selecting New Search instead of Within Results in the search box.
The holding institutions (archives, libraries, and historical societies) provide items in Hudson River Valley Heritage for use in research, scholarship, and private study.
Items may be protected by the U.S. Copyright Law (Title 17, U.S.C.). Usage of some items may also be subject to additional restrictions imposed by the copyright owner and/or the holding institution. Transmission or reproduction of a protected item requires the permission of the copyright owner and/or the holding institution. The holding institution is identified as part of the item description. It is the responsibility of the user to obtain permission to use the content on this site and requests should be addressed to the specific holding institutions.
The nature of historical, archival and manuscript collections often make it difficult to determine the exact copyright status of an item. Whenever possible, the holding institution provides information about copyright owners and other restrictions in the information fields of the records. The holding institution provides descriptive information for each item digitized to assist users in the identification of items and the possible determination of the historical importance and cultural context of an item. In some instances, the holding institution has incomplete information about creators, authors, publishers, copyright holders or other persons associated with the items in their collection. These institutions welcome comments from anyone who may have additional information about items in the collection, especially copyright owners who are not properly identified, so that appropriate information may be provided to other users in the future. In addition to contact information, the descriptive information for each digital item has a place for users to post comments.
